Raven had an unusual childhood deep in the woods of Washington. Her mother was unconventional and taught Raven to be unconventional. She was told by her mother that her father was nature. Her mother hated outsiders and was afraid to let Raven be part of that world. She had to beg her mother to go to school with the children she befriended in the woods, but she may go and experience a bit of the outside world. As Raven and her friends get older, Raven starts to realize that her beloved mother has been keeping secrets. Secrets that come to light after her mother takes ill and Raven's aunt steps in.

On the other side of the country, Ellis Abbey has spent nearly two decades in grief and self-exile. When her daughter Viola was just a baby, she was stolen. Taken from a park where Ellis was trying to juggle her two toddler sons and the baby. Ellis never forgave herself for losing Viola and struggles with her transgressions to this day. And then one day a wealthy woman shows up at her door with a teenage girl, claiming to be Viola. Will these women be able to come to terms with the past so that they can move forward with their lives?

The Light Through the Leaves is a story that is about forgiveness, redemption, and family. Both the family we are born into and the family that finds us. The story goes back and forth between Ellis and Raven. The timeline is somewhat confusing, but it all works out. What I really liked about this book was how nature is at the heart of everything. Ellis and Raven both live for nature. Mother Nature was another character in the story. It was almost magical. There were times that it felt that the book was longer than it needed to be, but it had the perfect ending. CLICK HERE FOR SPOILERS.

Bottom Line - The Light Through the Leaves was very reminiscent of a fairy tale. There was something magical about the characters and the characters. I fully enjoyed it and look forward to the next book by Glendy Vanderah.
