(62)Hamilton the Revolution by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Jeremy McCarter

On July 3rd millions of people across the country were engaged in one thing. Watching Hamilton on Disney+, the streaming service. I wasn't able to watch until the 4th of July, which seemed appropriate on so many levels. For two hours and forty minutes, I sat glued to my television. Singing along when I knew the lyrics, laughing at the King, and crying at certain times. It was everything I had hoped for and I couldn't wait to get more of the captivating Lin-Manuel Miranda, so I rushed to my tablet looking for the book that I had purchased years ago and has been lingering in the "Unread" section of my Kindle app.  I devoured this book in two days.

Hamilton the Revolution is truly a "behind the scenes" look at one of the most popular musicals of all time. Lin starts at the beginning when he first got the idea, and then it was called "The Hamilton Mixtape." He goes scene by scene, song by song, giving all sorts of insights to what he was thinking when he wrote the songs and set the stage. So many of the songs have lines or beats that pay homage to artists, authors, and other musicals.  From Lauryn Hill to South Pacific to Jay-Z and Pharrell Williams.  You get to see pictures of the very journals where Lin-Manuel Miranda put off of his ideas on paper.  It felt like you were getting a glimpse into a chef's kitchen or a scientist's laboratory. He also highlights the main cast and their successes. I was so fascinated by all of the detail that I couldn't stop reading.

Bottom Line - So many people spent time over the holiday weekend watching Hamilton. It was one of those unifying moments that I will always remember. Even though the country is still very much in a pandemic, a musical about one of our founding fathers united the country. If you watched and thought "I need more," then this book is for you!
