Christmas break is a time to rest, relax, and reconnect with old friends. For this group of old friends, they
decide to get together to spend
New Years at a hunting lodge in the Scottish countryside. They have been friends since their time at Oxford, but the carefree days of college are long gone. Most of them
are married, some of them have had children, some of them are having career issues, and some of them have dark secrets that they never want to
be revealed. Their time of revelry is interrupted when tragedy strikes and the snow prevents law enforcement from being able to get to them. Will the group of friends be able to get out of there alive?
II love a good mystery novel and
The Hunting Party was
really good. The story is told in alternating timelines, with alternating views. Before the murder is told from the perspective of a member of the group of friends. And the author rotates through them, so you are seeing the story from all angles. After the murder is primarily told from the perspective of the employees at the hunting lodge. Both of whom have their own secrets. The friends all seemed like entitled brats, with a few exceptions. Their behavior, when they got drunk, was appalling. It was so destructive that my jaw (and opinion of them) dropped. My one criticism of the book is that a few of the members of the group didn't get a lot of attention. I wanted to hear their stories and how they became friends with such brats.
In the end, all of the big reveals led to a satisfying conclusion. -

Bottom Line -
The Hunting Party is one of those mystery novels where the reader doesn't even know who has
been murdered until the very end. As the reader, you not only are trying to figure out who died, but who killed them. The author sprinkles clues along the way, but you really have no way of knowing if your guesses are right. That kind of approach makes this book a must-read for fans who love a good mystery.
