It was a cold winter day when D.D Warren gets the call. A man is dead and his wife, a Massachusetts State Trooper, is the prime suspect. When D.D. and Bobby Dodge get to the site, Tessa Leoni looks like she has been through nine rounds. She killed her husband in self-defense, right? So where is her six-year-old daughter? Why did the ME find something unusual about the body of the deceased?
Tessa Leoni would do anything for her daughter. Anything. She thought she was doing the right thing by marrying Brian Darby. He was good to her and her daughter. As a merchant marine, he was gone for sixty-day stretches, leaving Tessa and her daughter to get settled into their own routines, routines that Brian didn't like. His sixty-days on and sixty-days off left him plenty of time to kill. Some days he went hiking and other days he did things that put his family in jeopardy. But was his behaviors enough to justify Tessa killing him?
I love a good D.D. Warren novel. She is definitely a no-nonsense kind of character. She doesn't take bullshit from anybody. And certainly not from a fellow law enforcement officer with a deas husband and a missing daughter. This case is especially tough for D.D. as she just discovered news that makes looking for a missing child especially tough. The book alternates narrators, between D.D. and Tessa. The narration alone, make it clear that Tessa was a sympathetic character. D.D. had that harsh, Boston tone. And Tessa had a softer, motherly tone. And that made her a sympathetic character. Very early on, you get the idea that there is more to Tessa's story. As the truth starts to unfold, you can't help but root for her. -- CLICK HERE FOR SPOILERS.
Bottom Line - Lisa Gardner is such a talented mystery writer. Her characters are complex and multi-layered and in a world where D.D. Warren wants things to be black and white - it is often very grey. Love You More is just proof that there is a lot of gey in the world.
