(16)Girl, Wash Your Face by Rachel Hollis

I need you to sit down for what I am about to tell you.  I have never been part of a real-life book club.  Well, not until recently.  The first book that was read after I joined the book club was Ready Player One, which I have read a few times.

Next up was Girl, Wash Your Face.   This isn't normally my kind of book, but I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it.    Apparently, Rachel Hollis is a former LA event planner who married a Disney exec and has made a living blogging.  But there is more to Rachel Hollis than just what you see on social media.   With brutal honesty, she talks about all sorts of areas of her life where she was less than honest with herself and others.

Rachel Hollis talks all about her early days in LA.  Meeting her husband, family's experience with the foster care system and adoption.  Her story is heartbreaking, that is true. She also gets very candid about things like being bad at sex and her dependency on alcohol.  That kind of honesty is rare in these kinds of books.  Be aware, Rachel Hollis is also very honest about her Christian faith.  She sprinkles scripture throughout the book.  But not so much that those who aren't Christian will be turned off.  One thing I really loved was when she started talking about the need for inclusivity.  How she and her husband took a look at their church and realized that it was pretty homogenous.  And decided to seek out a church community with more diversity.  And then she gets pretty passionate about the "love thy neighbor" commandment.   I know plenty of Christians that need to hear that message.  On repeat.

Bottom Line -  Girl, Wash Your Face was one of those  "call to arms"  books for me.  Even though I struggle with organized religion, I found a lot of value in what Rachel Hollis had to say.   It is worth the read for anybody needing the motivation to live their best lives.
