Despite her wholesome appearance, Hannah Brooks is quite successful in her career as an Executive Protective Agent. Yes, Hannah is a bodyguard. Hannah had a rough few weeks when her boss assigned her a big client. First, her mother died, and then her EPA boyfriend dumped her. She wants nothing more than to get out of Houston. But her new client will not get her out of Texas. Jack Stapelton is a famous movie star known for his superhero movies. He is back in Texas because his mother is sick and his producers have hired a bodyguard because they are worried about an overzealous fan. They decide to pass Hannah off as Jack's girlfriend, which turns out to not be the worst thing in the world. Hannah finds herself very comfortable with Jack and his family. Their easygoing dynamic makes her long for a relationship she will never get to have with her mother. But then Hannah becomes a target for the overzealous fan and her time with the Stapleton family quickly ends. Were Hannah's feelings for Jack all an act? Or is there something there?
The Bodyguard turned out to be a surprising delight. I have read many books by Katherine Center, but I don't think that I have enjoyed any of them as much as I enjoyed The Bodyguard. Hannah is a perfectly imperfect character. She wanted to bury her grief any way she could. Instead, she was forced to face it differently. When she saw the Stapleton family engage with each other, she not only mourned her mother but the relationship she never had with her. But always wanted. It was quite heart-wrenching. In the end, Hannah got everything she wanted. And it was absolutely perfect.
Bottom Line - The Bodyguard was a fun book, with fun characters. I would even go so far as to say it was a "feel-good" kind of book. And aren't those the best?
