It blindsided Lillie Silva when her husband of nearly twenty years told her he wanted a divorce. She was planning a vacation to celebrate their son's graduation from high school and he was planning their divorce. Lillie is even more devastated to learn that Brad was having an affair with a wealthy young widow. Somebody that Lillie introduced him to, if you can believe that. The next year is full of difficulties for Lillie as she tries to adjust to her new life as a divorced woman. Especially since she still lives in the same small town as her ex and his new wife. Lillie examines her life, her past, and her future. And discovers that maybe the things she wants differ from what she thought.
Kristan Higgins knows how to write a good book. And great characters. Lillie Silva is far from perfect, but she feels so authentic. Like somebody I would consider a friend. The story is told from alternate perspectives: Lillie and Melissa, Brad's new wife. At first Melissa is the villain of the book. A vapid, calculated woman who set her sights on Brad from the very beginning. But then you realize there is more to her story. Brad was a douche from the very beginning. And frankly, Lillie was better off without him. One thing I really liked about the book was that after the divorce, Lillie deepened relationships with others in her life that had been very surface-level during her marriage. It was just another reason I thought Lillie was better off without Brad.
Bottom Line - Every year, I look forward to a new book by Kristan Higgins. Her novels are witty and real. With themes that are relatable. Out of the Clear Blue Sky is no different and quite enjoyable.
