There are voices that are iconic and unmistakable. Samuel L. Jackson. Morgan Freeman. James Earl Jones. And Matthew McConaughey is on that list. Ever since his first film where he ad-libbed the line "Alright, Alright, Alright." Yeah, he ad-libbed that. There wasn't anything surprising about Matthew McConaughey's story. I think everybody knew the story of his father dying during sex with his mom. But I didn't know about his experience as a foreign exchange student in Australia. What a ride. Speaking of ride, his motorcycle ride across Europe was fun to hear about, but the fact that he took that trip with Cole Hauser distracted me. Um. Cole Hauser. Rip from Yellowstone.
Just like any celebrity memoir, there isn't any earth shattering piece of advice, but you learn a bit about the man who you have spent hours watching on the big screen. But Matthew McConaughey kept things light by interjecting bumper stickers and other fun musings. Things that make you laugh.
Bottom Line - If you ever decide to read Greenlights, take my advice and spring for the audiobook. It is an experience that you will not forget.
