When Sophie O'Neill was growing up they never stayed in any one place long enough for her to consider it "home." So when Sophie and her husband, Graham, decided it was time to move their young son out of Chicago, they weighed their options heavily. And they moved to the small Texas town that was the closest thing to "home" for Sophie. Mapleton, Texas is small and quaint. The kind of place where moms run the PTA and dads mow the lawns every Saturday. It is all too perfect, and it doesn't take long for Sophie to become bored with life in Mapleton. From a far Sophie observes the socialite Margot Banks and covets a spot in her elite circle of friends. And then it happens. They invited her into their circle and soon Sophie's calendar is full of pool parties and Friday nights at Margot's lake cabin, where they blow off steam by drinking and shooting guns. It is all fun and games until they find a teen girl dead on the shooting range. Sophie's entire world comes crashing down around her. Who shot the girl? And will the Hunting Wives ever be the same?
I want to start by saying that these women are horrible people. I had moments of pity for Sophie, but over and over she made terrible decisions. Margot was an absolute monster. For many reasons, but there were many times that I felt I was reading a Mean Girls class reunion and Margot was a grown up Regina George. But Sophie was no Cady. Having said that. I couldn't look away. The Hunting Wives is salacious and steamy. But it is the car crash that you can't look away from. No matter how cringeworthy it is to watch Sophie throw away her life, you can't wait to see what happens next. I will say that I was a bit shocked by the twist, it wasn't what I expected. - CLICK HERE FOR SPOILERS.
Bottom Line - The Hunting Wives is the perfect book to throw in the bag for the beach or the pool. Be sure to keep a cold drink nearby, because you are going to need something to cool you off after reading this one!
