Kristen and Emily have been best friends since college. They both have busy careers and are enjoying their lives. Even though Kristen has moved to the other side of the world, the two friends meet up somewhere in the world every year. This year they are in the mountains of Chile and are enjoying the sites, the culture, and the relaxation of their vacation. On their last night, Kristen takes a man back to their hotel room. When Emily returns to the room, she finds Kristen in shock and the man is dead. Just like what happened to Emily when they were in Cambodia last year. This time Emily takes charge to dispose of the body and clean up the scene. The next day, she and Kristen part ways, but Emily cannot let go of what happened. When Kristen shows up in Wisconsin, Emily worries Kristen is being very controlling, not letting her spend time with her boyfriend, and threatening to expose pictures from those deadly nights. When Emily does a little digging, she realizes Kristen hasn't been very honest about her path. Will Kristen expose Emily and what happened on vacation? Or will she go further and silence Emily forever?
Can I just say that every time I saw Kristen's name in print, I saw red flags flying everywhere. If she were a boyfriend behaving the way she did with Emily, Emily would have probably noticed those red flags earlier. I guess the moral of the story is that creepy behavior is creepy behavior, whether it is a friend or a boyfriend. What I thought was interesting was just how fast Aaron and Emily's relationship progressed. Definitely not a sign of a healthy relationship. And then they went to Arizona? Oh boy - CLICK HERE FOR SPOILERS. I was a little confused by the very end. Was the author hinting that Emily was the one instigating everything and that it was going to happen again.?
Bottom Line - As the reader, I wanted to shake Emily awake to Kristen's behavior, to say the least, We Were Never Here was a gripping read from start to finish.
