Alex is the single mother of a teenager and a baby and is starting over. She has left a bad relationship and moved her little family to the idyllic rural community of Pine Ridge. Mostly, they have been welcomed into this commune-like community, but there have been some people less than welcoming. But then bizarre things start happening and Alex worries that her decision to move to Pine Ridge may have put her children in danger.
I will be honest, I finished The Shadow House a few weeks ago and not much of it has stuck with me. I remember thinking that Alex seemed like a good mom, but she had a fight with her son, which made it clear even to her she has not made good choices. The story is told from alternate perspectives. Another mother with another teenage son, creating some parallels to be figured out. There was some "spookiness" to the story as there were weird things happening around Alex's home. Packages left and general mischief. In the end, it was discovered that not everybody in Pine Ridge was who they said they were. Nothing too malicious, just secretive.
Bottom Line - The Shadow House was a book that held my interest at the moment, but didn't really stick with me after the fact. And that is okay, not every book needs to stick with you after the fact.
