Hattie Kavanaugh has been restoring homes since she was eighteen years old and joined her father-in-law's company. She has made some poor decisions recently and lost some money, so Hattie could definitely use a win. She doesn't expect that win to come in the form of a home improvement television show. But when a producer comes to town, he discovers Hattie's talent and offers her an opportunity that she can't resist, her own show called The Homewreckers. Only the network bigwigs think they need to add additional talent to the show, to create some drama. So between the playboy designer and the brooding producer, Hattie thinks she has enough drama. But while the house that Hattie has selected to renovate for the show is rich in history, the history turns dark when they find a body during the renovations. Will Hattie be able to finish the house before she loses her money and her reputation?

Mary Kay Andrews knows how to write to her market. Just speculating here, but I am positive that many of her faithful readers are also HGTV viewers. I know this because I am that reader. Hattie Kavanaugh is a woman who knows heartbreak and grief, losing her husband, so young. She is a hard worker and determined to earn forgiveness for past mistakes, even though there is nothing to forgive. The men in Hattie's life definitely fit some stereotypes. The overprotective father-in-law, the handsome, yet skeevy designer, the quiet and brooding producer. Interwoven into this beach read was an enjoyable mystery. CLICK HERE FOR SPOILERS

Bottom Line - It doesn't matter how cliche the characters may get, one thing is certain. My summers don't start until I read Mary Kay Andrews.
