(43)Before He Kills by Blake Pierce

Twenty-five-year old Detective Mackenzie White not only has to deal with being a woman in a male-dominated industry, but she is young enough to be the daughter of most of her colleagues. It makes for an interesting work environment. Even more so when a serial killer shows up in their sleepy Nebraska town. Mackenzie is quicker, stronger, and smarter than her colleagues and that has never been more evident than when they are hunting the Scarecrow Killer. When the FBI is called in, it is Mackenzie that the handsome Agent Ellington wants on the case. Will this case shift Mackenzie's career in a new direction or will it end her law enforcement career forever?

Before He Kills was my book club's May selection. I decided that I would listen to it on audiobook for more efficient use of my time. Until I heard the narrator's accent. They had a British narrator reading a book set in Nebraska and as much as I generally love British narrators, not when the book is set in Nebraska. There were other things that really grated on my nerves. For example, Mackenzie was with her boyfriend for seven or eight years, living together for three and yet she blames her relationship with her father for "a string of failed relationships." What? Beyond that, I can respect Mackenzie's tenacity and ambition. She put up with a lot of shit because she was so young. But she showed them. - CLICK HERE FOR  SPOILERS.  I wasn't all that surprised by the ending, but I was expecting more. I had a couple of different ways that I thought the book was going to go, but it didn't.  And sadly, it would have made the ending better.

Bottom Line - Before He Kills has a lot of positive reviews on Amazon, but I really struggled with it.  Between the predictable nature, the continuity mistakes, and the British narrator I wasn't impressed at all.  What did you think of Before He Kills?
