Nikki, Sami, and Tori Knotek are three sisters who shared a childhood full of horrors. Their mother, Kelly, inflicted unspeakable horrors on not only the three of them but on poor wayward souls that had the misfortune of finding themselves in her orbit. Including their cousin, Shane. And two wayward souls that made the mistake of thinking Shelly was their friend. Shelly inflicted unthinkable torture on all of them. From making them do yardwork naked to withholding food and drugging them. Shelley tortured those around her for her own amusement and worse, she told those that she abused that she did it because she loved them. Eventually, Nikki and Sami could escape the house of horrors and they made the mistake of thinking that Shelly wouldn't abuse Tori like she abused them, but they were horribly wrong. Will Sami and Nikki be able to rescue Tori before it is too late?
If You Tell is one of those books that is just so horrific that you can't imagine that it is a true story. But it is. Gregg Olsen descriptively details the abuse heaped upon the Knotek sisters and the family friends. And let me warn you that it is not for the faint of heart. We listened to the audiobook version of the book on a long road trip and more than once my husband and I explained "WTF?" It was that bad. Thankfully, the sisters were able to stick together. I doubt any of them will ever get over their childhood, but they have been able to move past it.
Bottom Line - While I haven't been swept up in the "True Crime" fandom, I like a good story as much as anybody else. Gregg Olsen has told the Knotek in such a captivating way I don't think I will ever forget it.
