Faith Winters has been released from the psychiatric hospital where she has been for the last year just in time for the ten-year anniversary of the night that changed her life. She was the sole survivor of a massacre that killed her father, her sister, her friend, and her friend's mother. The police believe that her father did it and then killed himself. But Faith knows better. She knows that the man she hid from in the woods was not her father, it was Rat-Face. She has seen him since that night, that is how she ended up in the hospital again. Now she is out and struggling with the demons that have haunted her ever since that night. Despite the AA and the Survivors Group meeting, Faith finds herself at the bar, getting ready to toast the memories of the people who died that night. After six shots she stumbles into the night and sees Rat-Face driving down the street. But nobody believes a drunk girl. When strange things start to happen to Faith, she has to wonder, is Rat-Face coming after her or is she as crazy as everybody says she is?
It doesn't take the reader long to figure out that Faith Winters is a hot mess. The events of that night did serious mental damage to a young girl. Almost the minute she got out of the hospital she was looking for liquid trouble. But once you meet her mother, you understand a little bit better. Her mother wrote a book about that night and Faith's troubles since that night and called it "The Girl Who Lived" exposing Faith's nightmares to the world. Faith meets a lot of people who have their own motivations and their own secrets. As the reader, you don't know who she should trust. Tommy, her sister's boyfriend, who is now a cop dealing with his own demons? For the longest time, I was convinced he was working with Rat-Face. There were many times when I thought that I had figured it out, but I was way wrong. - CLICK HERE FOR SPOILERS -
Bottom Line - The Girl Who Lived is a twisty tale of fear, grief, and also redemption. The author does a fantastic job of keeping the readers guessing in this fast-paced mystery. It was this month's selection for my book club and we enjoyed every page of it!
