(28)Life Will be the Death of Me by Chelsea Handler

Chelsea Handler is back with a  new book called Life Will Be the Death of Me.   But this time she takes her readers on an emotional journey to self-awareness.   The book opens with Chelsea visiting her psychiatrist and trying to process her grief over her brother, Chet, who died when she was just a child.  She revisits the traumatic experience of losing him and how her family handled (or didn't handle) their grief.  She also gets real about the death of her parents.  First her mother's battle with cancer.  She said less about her father's death, but I wonder if that is because of her rocky relationship with her father.  She DID talk about how she casually revealed his death during a session with Dan, the psychiatrist.   She also did not get into the grief she must have felt about the death of Chunk.

In typical hysterical fashion, Chelsea Handler gets honest about her attempts at self-sufficiency that didn't go so well.  Like traveling to Spain (and back) with Chunk.  They got there just fine, but the return trip had me laughing out loud.   Or when she adopted Bert and Berneice only to tell her assistants to take the weekend off on their first weekend home.  More hilarity.

I never really got to watch any of  Chelsea Handler's shows, but I have read all of her books.  And I have enjoyed each and every one of them.   I felt different about Life Will be the Death of Me.  Yes, it was just as funny as you have come to expect from a Chelsea Handler book, but there was a sense of vulnerability that hasn't been there before now.   Talking about such devastating topics had to have been hard for her, especially when she is known for being a tough-talking comedian.  It just made me like her even more.

Bottom Line - While Life Will be the Death of Me tackled some pretty serious and deeply personal topics, it was still infused with the wit and humor that millions of people love about Chelsea Handler.
