For years my husband has been bugging me about watching the NBC comedy Parks and Recreation. Until finally one day I gave in and we started watching the comedy. I discovered what millions of people already knew - it was a hilariously smart comedy with fun, unique characters. Including the grumpy, anti-government Ron Swanson. We have just two episodes left and I am going to savor them as long as I can.
I know that Ron Swanson is just a character on a television show, but I wanted to know more about the man who plays Ron Swanson. Paddle Your Own Canoe is Nick Offerman's story. Nick Offerman grew up in rural Illinois in the 80's. His childhood was not that undifferent than mine. While he didn't grow on the family farm, he was close enough to be part of farm life. From walking beans to learning how to drive by driving a tractor. He was also from a Catholic family and grew up surrounded by cousins in a small town where kids played all sports as well as marched in the band and were in the school plays. He then went off to college where he studied theater, but he didn't just act. He helped to build the props and sets. And when he was struggling as an actor in California, it was his woodworking skills that kept him afloat. He goes on to talk about his efforts to get noticed in Hollywood, when he met his wife, Megan Mullaly, and getting the job on Parks and Rec.
But more than just Hollywood inside information, Nick Offerman shares some really pertinent information about life in general. From commentary on religion, equality, and our nation's addiction to screens his observations are witty and smart and sound a little bit like the Ron Swanson we have come to know and love.
Bottom Line - Paddle Your Own Canoe has been lingering around our Audible library for years, as my husband listened to it years ago. I finally dusted it off and pushed play in an effort to prolong my exposure to Ron Swanson as long as possible. It is a must read for all of those fans out there.
