Toby is a good guy who has everything going for him. He has a good job in PR, has an amazing girlfriend, and is just enjoying life. That all changes the night he wakes up to find to burglars in his flat. Not only do they rob him, but they beat him nearly to death. They don't know who did it and the doctors say that he may never fully recover. Some of his memories could be gone forever. Toby and his girlfriend, Melissa, escape the city to Toby's family home, where they care for Toby's dying uncle and host weekly family dinners. It was at one of those dinners when a child playing in the garden discovered a skull at the base of the tree. The police believe that the body is that of a classmate of Toby's. He doesn't believe that he was the one who killed Dominic. But he doesn't remember and as the evidence is stacking up against him, how can he prove his innocence?
Tana French is just a genius when it comes to writing a mystery. First of all, she is Irish, that alone is a reason for me to love her. But in The Witch Elm she has written a mystery that will leave you guessing. Toby was such an interesting character, especially after his beating, his personality definitely changed. I loved his ancient family home that has been in his family for generations. The family was also unique and eccentric. Susanna and Leon, Toby's cousins, had a shared history with him, the difference was they could remember their history, and Toby's memory was spotty at best. Their shared history is critical to this story. But so is harassment and how far one will be pushed before breaking. As the police investigate the body found in the tree, the reader starts to believe it could only be one way, but the truth, when revealed, is a little bit shocking. But not nearly as shocking as what happens in the end. -- CLICK HERE FOR SPOILERS
Bottom Line - A lot of people were disappointed that The Witch Elm was not part of the Dublin Murder Squad series, but not me. I loved this stand-alone novel. I loved that we were immersed with Toby and his family, not the police. As far as I am concerned it should not be missed if you love a good mystery like I do.
