Heartbroken is the heart pounding tale of three women and an island.
Birdie is the difficult matriarch of the Burke family and Heart Island has been in her family for generations. Every summer her family gathers at Heart Island, but recently it has been more out of a sense of obligation rather than out of an eagerness to spend time as a family. This year is no different. Birdie's daughter, Kate, is dreading the trip to Heart Island, especially after her husband, Shawn tells her that he has to stay behind for work.
The other half of the story is Emily. She is working as a waitress in a small restaurant and trapped in a bad relationship with a very bad man. She feels lost and longs for the kind of life where she "summers" on an island like Heart Island. Emily's boyfriend, Dean, is a user and plans on using the kindness of Emily's boss to further his own "career". It is when Emily's "world" collides with Kate and Birdie's "world" that the sparks in this book really fly. What happens when these two worlds collide and will they all make it out alive?
Heartbroken is a heart pounding suspense novel. At first I was unsure of how the three women were connected, but when it is revealed, I was really shocked. The author does a really good job of building the suspense and building the stories that when they finally do collide, you are sitting on the edge of your seat waiting to see what is going to happen.
Bottom line, beach home stories are a summer literature staple.
Heartbroken takes that beach story and turns it into a masterful piece of literary suspense. If you are ready for a break from the summer staples, give
Heartbroken a try.
