Because if there’s one thing she knows for sure, it’s that secrets don’t stay buried forever.

I think Molly Gray is one of my favorite characters. I was excited to read another book featuring her and all of the characters at the Regency Grand Hotel. I also really enjoyed getting more of Molly's backstory. She has led an interesting life and it was even more clear that her Gran has always been her champion.

Final thoughts - Molly Gray is a delightful character who uses her incredible brain to solve murders. The author set this ending up to lead to another book and possibly another career for Molly.

The Mystery Guest by Nita Prose

Pages: 277

Publisher: Ballantine Books

Publication Date: 11/28/2023

Buy It Here!

<span style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #0f1111; font-family: "Amazon Ember", Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">

Charlotte's Web of Bookshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04035997237787598512noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-219106694588749998.post-83377929528125761652024-02-03T18:52:00.004-07:002024-02-03T18:52:47.666-07:00(5)Only If You're Lucky by Stacy Willingham

<span style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #0f1111; font-family: "Amazon Ember", Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">

<span style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #0f1111; font-family: "Amazon Ember", Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">Lucy Sharpe is larger than life. Magnetic, addictive. Bold and dangerous. Especially for Margot, who meets Lucy at the end of their freshman year at a liberal arts college in South Carolina. Margot is the shy one, the careful one, always the sidekick and never the center of attention. But when Lucy singles her out at the end of the year, a year Margot spent studying and playing it safe, and asks her to room together, something in Margot can't say no—something daring, or starved, or maybe even envious.

And so Margot finds herself living in an off-campus house with three other girls, Lucy, the ringleader; Sloane, the sarcastic one; and Nicole, the nice one, the three of them opposites but also deeply intertwined. The victim of a famous kidnapping as a child and a widow four times over, Ruby ruled the tiny town of Tavistock from Ashby House, her family’s estate high in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #0f1111; font-family: "Amazon Ember", Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">But in the aftermath of her death, her adopted son, Camden, wants little to do with the house or the money—and even less to do with the surviving McTavishes. Was there any truth to the persistent rumors following her disappearance as a girl? What really happened to those four husbands, who all died under mysterious circumstances? And why did she adopt Cam in the first place? Soon, Jules and Cam realize that an inheritance can entail far more than what’s written in a will––and that the bonds of family stretch far beyond the grave.

I have read every book of Rachel Hawkins and I think this was her best yet. Camden and Jules were characters that kept you on your toes. You don't realize how twisty things are until the very end. With Ruby as a historical narrator, it reminded me a bit of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. A very dark and twisted version of it.

Final thoughts- If you are looking for a good thriller to keep you on the edge of your seat, look no further!

The Heiress by Rachel Hawkins

Pages: 281

Publisher: St. Martin's Press

Publication Date: 1/9/2024

<span style="background-color: white; color: #0f1111; font-family: "Amazon Ember", Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">

<p style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #0f1111; font-family: "Amazon Ember", Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; margin: -4px 0px 14px; padding: 0px;">Mia and Finn are busy turning a derelict house into their dream home when Mia unexpectedly falls pregnant. I was so engaged in the story that I didn't want to stop.

Final thoughts - there is some seriously dysfunctional situations in this book and a trigger warning, but if you can handle the brutality, you will read one of the best books.

Title: Keep it in the Family by John Marrs

Pages: 380

Publication Date:10/18/22

Publisher: Thomas & Mercer

Charlotte's Web of Bookshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04035997237787598512noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-219106694588749998.post-23065325648164930852024-01-09T06:00:00.001-07:002024-01-09T06:00:00.136-07:00Happy Tuesday!!

Charlotte's Web of Bookshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04035997237787598512noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-219106694588749998.post-51862880755342429252024-01-07T15:49:00.001-07:002024-01-07T15:49:02.464-07:00(2)First Lie Wins by Ashley Elston

Every month I check out what book has been selected for Reese Witherspoon's book club. First Lie Wins looked intriguing to me, so I downloaded the audiobook and finished it in one day.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #0f1111; font-family: "Amazon Ember", Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">

<span style="background-color: white; color: #0f1111; font-family: "Amazon Ember", Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">The identity comes first: Evie Porter. The author played cat and mouse with her readers, only revealing information after the reader (including myself)made guesses that were way wrong. I wanted her to be okay and I wanted her to have the best ending possible. I was not disappointed.

Final thoughts - I really enjoyed First Lie Wins. It was so fast-paced that I was surprised when I was nearing the end. The first book of the year was a book that I selected because I saw it on a few "Best of 2023" lists.

<p style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #0f1111; font-family: "Amazon Ember", Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; margin: -4px 0px 14px; padding: 0px;">

<p style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #0f1111; font-family: "Amazon Ember", Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; margin: -4px 0px 14px; padding: 0px;">Aidan Thomas is a hard-working family man and a somewhat beloved figure in the small upstate New York town where he lives. He’s the kind of man who always lends a hand and has a good word for everyone. But Aidan has a dark secret he’s been keeping from everyone in town and those closest to him. He’s a kidnapper and serial killer. Aidan has murdered eight women and there’s a ninth he has earmarked for death: Rachel, imprisoned in a backyard shed, fearing for her life.
<p style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #0f1111; font-family: "Amazon Ember", Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; margin: -4px 0px 14px; padding: 0px;">When Aidan’s wife dies, he and his thirteen-year-old daughter Cecilia are forced to move. Aidan has no choice but to bring Rachel along, introducing her to Cecilia as a “family friend” who needs a place to stay. Aidan is betting on Rachel, after five years of captivity, being too brainwashed and fearful to attempt to escape. But Rachel is a fighter and survivor, and recognizes Cecilia might just be the lifeline she has waited for all these years. As Rachel tests the boundaries of her new living situation, she begins to form a tenuous connection with Cecilia. And when Emily, a local restaurant owner, develops a crush on the handsome widower, she finds herself drawn into Rachel and Cecilia’s orbit, coming dangerously close to discovering Aidan’s secret.
<p style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #0f1111; font-family: "Amazon Ember", Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; margin: -4px 0px 0px; padding: 0px;">Told through the perspectives of Rachel, Cecilia, and Emily, The Quiet Tenant explores the psychological impact of Aidan’s crimes on the women in his life—and the bonds between those women that give them the strength to fight back. Both a searing thriller and an astute study of trauma, survival, and the dynamics of power, The Quiet Tenant is an electrifying debut thriller by a major talent.

The Quiet Tenant was a good book, but it wasn't the heart-pounding thriller that I was hoping. Instead, it was quietly tragic. I ached for Rachel and Cecilia and I was desperate for Emily to not get entangled with Aidan. I got frustrated with Rachel when she did not take advantage of opportunities to leave. I struggled to be empathetic, knowing that five years of abuse and brainwashing is hard to undo. By the time I got to the end of the book, it felt overdue.

Final thoughts - I understand why some put it on their "Best of 2023" list, but I would not give it that honor. It was good, not great.

Title: The Quiet Tenant

Author: Clemence Michallon

Pages: 320

Publication Date: 6/20/2023

<p style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #0f1111; font-family: "Amazon Ember", Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; margin: -4px 0px 0px; padding: 0px;">
Charlotte's Web of Bookshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04035997237787598512noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-219106694588749998.post-24112998682230372272023-12-29T10:46:00.000-07:002023-12-29T10:46:42.405-07:002023 Books
In the past year, various life events took precedence, causing a lapse in my blogging consistency. As I reflect on 2023, I acknowledge this and aim to improve in the upcoming year as part of my New Year's resolution. Meanwhile, here's a list of the books I read during 2023.

My favorites of the year include:

The Measure by Nikki Erlick: A thought provoking novel forcing you to think about your own mortality. Would you want to know how long your life will be?

Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt: A book that I did not want to end. Quietly charming and full of heart, I was sad when it ended.

Tom Lake by Ann Patchett: The audiobook is read by Meryl Streep and her performance made the book for me. It was absolutely mesmerizing.

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0-GfWnxAHYT1QG3hagqczhfckuvh2vOazMvx3mTi4bDl9ZSMKTIYprh_usVzXjNRFqH41OEZlZXwstJcL85QhnBU2nJ9EUUz_epwDyOjpbf2T5eG5D5PqwJ0GMx7k5irqXQdWhxwIpXjDZyrDiAOeMYuTU_yHJ8AxgCjUpGgheyk2vFd8welFFGqgFfg/s776/Screenshot%202023-12-29%20095938.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em;
