Joe Kingsley III is as close to royalty as it gets in America. His father was an astronaut, considered a hero by the entire country. Joe was just a toddler when his father tragically died in an accident. The whole country adoringly watched Joe grow up. The media followed his every move, expecting big things from the hero's son.
Cate Cooper did not have a good childhood. Her father died when she was young and her mother married a mean man out of desperation. Cate wanted nothing more than to get out of that house, so when a scout for a modeling agency approaches Cate on the boardwalk, she accepts the opportunity to make her own money and move out of the house before she even graduates from high school. It was luck that Cate was on the beach when Joe Kingsley was walking his dog on the beach. Even though Cate had had a crush on Joe ever since she was a young girl, she did not want to be in a relationship with him. She did not want the media scrutiny; she did not want the dysfunction of her family to be exposed, and she did not want to get her heart broken. Despite all of that, she falls in love with Joe Kingsley. Will Joe and Cate get the happy-ever-after they desperately want?
If you follow Emily Giffin on social media, it does not surprise you she wrote a story based on JFK Jr and his romance with Carolyn Bessette. Meant to Be is told from alternative perspectives, switching between Joe and Cate. The author took liberties with the story but kept it interesting and fresh. And gave them the ending they deserved.
Bottom Line - I really don't know enough about the real couple to know how many liberties Emily Giffin really took, but I know that Meant to Be was a charming read inspired by America's own "royal" family.
