Dara and Marie Durant are dancers. Since their birth, their entire existence has resolved around dancing. Their mother was the founder of a popular dance school and the sisters took over the dance studio after their parents' tragic death. Now Dara works with the older students, while Marie works with the younger students and Dara's husband, Charlie runs all the paperwork with the business. Nutcracker season is upon them when there is a fire in one studio, threatening their yearly Nutcracker performance. The contractor they hired to fix the studio turns out to wreak more havoc than he repairs. His mere presence disrupts the shaky existence that Dara, Marie, and Charlie have been existing in for years. Will the sisters be able to maintain the balance or will everything come crashing down?
The Turnout was an intense novel about two sisters and the world they live in. It was almost like Dara and Marie lived in their own world and shut out everything else. Everything. And the sisters didn't even have the best of relationships. Dara seemed bossy and demanding of her sister, rude almost. And Marie just took it. The cadence of the book was odd - the book was written in snippets within chapters. It made it seem that Dara was short with everybody, which was brilliant on the author's part. The author also dropped hints throughout the book that there was something scandalous between Dara, Marie, and Charlie. I think my imagination made it more graphic than the author. - CLICK HERE FOR SPOILERS. The end turned out to be much more tragic than I was expecting, but I couldn't stop reading until the very last page.
Bottom Line -Even though The Turnout should come with several "trigger warnings" you will find yourself swept up into the lives of the Durant sisters. For better or worse, you will not be able to stop reading this book.
