Daniel Sutherland is found murdered on his houseboat early one morning, just weeks after his own mother died. And fifteen years after the tragic death of a three-year-old little boy. Left to grieve all three is Carla Myerson. Daniel was her nephew, his mother was her sister. And baby Ben was her son. Laura is the woman who was seen leaving Daniel's home that morning. She has a long history with law enforcement, but did she kill Daniel? Miriam is the neighbor who reported the murder, and she has a long history with the Myerson family. These women have tragic histories, but are any of them capable of murder?
A Slow Fire Burning is a tough read. Not just because of a dead body, that is normal for thrillers. But because the backstories of these characters are just tragic and heartbreaking. The only thing I feel for Carla, Laura, and Miriam is just pity. I was grateful that Laura had Irene. And Carla had Theo. But Miriam had nobody, and it was just sad. I get that authors are constantly looking for the edgy twist that will have everybody talking, but this one just seemed to fall short. There was nothing about the end that was all that surprising and that was just disappointing. - CLICK HERE FOR SPOILERS.
Bottom Line - I picked up A Slow Fire Burning with high expectations and instead I found heartbreak.
