Letty Carnahan hasn't always had the best relationship with her younger sister, Tanya. They didn't speak for three years after Tanya stole her boyfriend, the wealthy real estate mogul, Evan. Four years later and Evan and Tanya are in a bitter custody battle over their daughter, Maya. Tanya warned Letty that if anything ever were to happen to her, she should take Maya and run. So the day that Letty finds her sister murdered, she did just that. She took Maya, her go-bag, and left New York City behind. Letty took it as a sign that Tanya had a magazine featuring a beach hotel on Treasure Island, Florida. There she meets the owner, Ava, her two children, and their quirky guests. It isn't long before The Murmuring Surf feels like home, but Letty can't help but constantly look over her shoulder. Will she be able to comfortably settle into life at The Murmuring Surf or will her past catch up with her?
The Newcomer is the perfect beach read. In this one book, you have a steam romance, a murder mystery, and a family that you choose for yourself. Letty Carnahan has just one goal and that is to keep Maya safe. At first, she was worried that Ava's handsome son, Joe, was going to make things difficult, but he turned out to be everything Letty ever wanted in a man. I really liked how her relationship with Ava developed. She was the mother that Letty never had but always wanted. I was worried that Evan was going to swoop in and make trouble for Letty, but things worked out nicely. - CLICK HERE FOR SPOILERS. Plot aside, I think my favorite thing about this book was the idea that places like The Murmuring Surf even exist. Quiet, family-owned motels that create an "everybody is family" kind of place. Retirement is never far from my mind these days, and a place like The Murmuring Surf would be an ideal place to spend winters in my retirement.
Bottom Line - Mary Kay Andrews is clearly one of the reigning queens of the "beach read." The Newcomer is the kind of book that makes you want to chuck it all and go bury your toes in the sand and then fall asleep listening to the waves crash to shore.
